In celebration of National Women’s Month and in line with its commitment to promoting gender equality and empowerment, Isabela State University (ISU) San Mariano Campus successfully conducted the G.I. JANE (Gender Initiative: Justice, Advocacy, Nurturing and Empowerment) Women’s Protection Laws and Practical Self-Defense Training on March 30, 2026, at the Agri-Educ Quadrangle.

Anchored on the principles of Justice, Advocacy, Nurturing, and Empowerment, the activity aimed to strengthen participants’ awareness of women’s rights and legal protections while equipping them with practical self-defense skills that promote personal safety, confidence, and resilience. The initiative reflects the University’s continuing efforts to foster a gender-responsive, inclusive, and empowering environment for all members of the academic community.

The program formally commenced with a prayer led by Ms. Femelonia C. Cabatan, Campus Nurse II, followed by the singing of the National Anthem. Dr. Mark Rennel D. Molato, GAD Focal Person, delivered the opening remarks, emphasizing the importance of advancing gender equality and creating safe spaces where women are informed, protected, and empowered.

Prof. Drolly P. Claravall, EdD, Campus Administrator, conveyed her message of support, underscoring the University’s commitment to implementing meaningful Gender and Development initiatives that uphold the rights, welfare, and empowerment of women.

The lecture proper was facilitated by PCpl. Jennifer P. Abordo, who discussed the topic, “Women’s Protection Laws.” The session provided participants with a comprehensive understanding of the legal frameworks that safeguard women against violence, abuse, exploitation, and discrimination. Participants were likewise informed of their rights, available legal remedies, and the importance of reporting and preventing gender-based violence.

An open forum followed, allowing participants to actively engage in discussions, seek clarification on legal concerns, and share insights on issues affecting women in various sectors of society. The interactive session fostered greater awareness and encouraged participants to become advocates for gender equality and women’s rights within their respective communities.

To complement the learning session, participants joined a Zumba warm-up activity led by PMSg. Mylin B. Simbulan, promoting physical wellness and active participation. The highlight of the event was the Practical Self-Defense Training conducted by PSMS Ritzuel V. Espiritu and PMSg. Randy G. Garcia. Through hands-on demonstrations and guided exercises, participants learned essential self-defense techniques and safety strategies that can help them respond effectively to potentially dangerous situations.

The practical training reinforced the core objectives of the G.I. JANE initiative by empowering participants not only through knowledge of their rights but also through the development of practical skills that enhance personal security and self-confidence. The activity served as a reminder that empowerment encompasses both awareness and preparedness.

The program concluded with the awarding of certificates to the resource persons and facilitators in recognition of their valuable contributions to the success of the activity. In her closing remarks, Dr. Aisie B. Liban, Director for Academic Affairs, expressed her appreciation to the organizers, guest speakers, facilitators, and participants for their active involvement and support in advancing the University’s Gender and Development agenda.

Through initiatives such as G.I. JANE, ISU San Mariano Campus continues to champion gender sensitivity, legal awareness, and personal empowerment, reinforcing its commitment to creating a safe, inclusive, and gender-responsive academic environment. The activity stands as a testament to the University’s dedication to nurturing informed, resilient, and empowered individuals who can contribute meaningfully to society while upholding the principles of equality, respect, and social justice.
